Malcolm D H Smith Memorial Scholarship

Professor Malcolm DH Smith was a leading international figure in Asian legal studies and the Founding Director of the Asian Law Centre at the University of Melbourne. Established to remember Professor Smith and his exceptional contribution to Asian legal studies, this scholarship is open to a first-year student enrolled in or enrolling in the Juris Doctor degree commencing at Melbourne Law School who has completed at a tertiary institution in Australia or Asia an undergraduate law degree or a degree majoring in Asian studies. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and the applicant’s commitment to understanding one or more Asian societies. The ability to speak an Asian language is desirable.

  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    Enrolling students:

    • Be a domestic or international student; and
    • Have applied for and been selected into the Melbourne JD; and
    • Have completed either:
      • an undergraduate degree majoring in Asian studies at a tertiary institution in Australia or Asia, or
      • an undergraduate law degree at a tertiary institution in Asia.

    Current students:

    • Be admitted into the first-year Juris Doctor course at Melbourne Law School; and
    • Have completed either:
      • an undergraduate degree majoring in Asian studies at a tertiary institution in Australia or Asia, or
      • an undergraduate law degree at a tertiary institution in Asia.

    Selection criteria

    To be considered, applicants will need to provide a CV, academic transcripts and a brief statement outlining their commitment to understanding one or more Asian societies. Capacity to speak an Asian language is desirable.

    Selection is based on:

    • Academic results; and
    • The applicant's commitment to understanding one or more Asian societies.
  • Application process

    Enrolling students: Domestic and international applicants must have submitted an application for the Melbourne JD by their respective application deadlines for commencement the following year.

    Applicants who wish to be considered for this scholarship must also complete the scholarship application. The deadline for applications closes 11:59pm 31 October 2023.

    Current students: Applicants who wish to be considered for this scholarship must also complete the scholarship application.

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Enrolling students: Successful applicants will receive an outcome by the end of November.

    Current students: Successful applicants will receive their outcome approximately one month after applications close.
